next president of the united states, governor mitt romney! >> last night romney who spent long hours preparing for tomorrow's debate said the stakes are greater than simply crowning a winner of the debate. >> people want to know who's going to win? who's going to score the punches and who's going to make the biggest difference and the arguments they make, and there's going to be all the scoring of winning and losing. you know, in my view, it's not so much winning and losing or even the people themselves, the president and myself. it's about something bigger than that. these debates are an opportunity for each of us to describe the pathway forward for america that we would choose. >> the president meanwhile spent most of the day yesterday preparing for the debate. at his nevada campaign headquarters. taking a break to deliver pizza to one of the local campaign offices. he then started working the phones to thank volunteers. >> that was very nice, you know. you know, although basically they're keeping me indoors all the time. it's a drag. they'

what the romney side needs is that they still have to persuade people that governor romney is the guy they should vote for. at the national level, that means they need to fix whatever has gone so wrong with their campaign message and they need to stop doing whatever it is that has turned so many people off to their candidate. when you ask voters whether they like this mitt romney guy, the answer is a very, very plain answer. no. his favorable ratings are in the low 40s. almost 10 points lower than the ratings for president obama. lower, even, than the famously unpopular former president george w. bush right now. swing state voters say they do not think that mitt romney cares about the needs and problems of people like them. some of mr. romney's numbers are just shockingly bad. i mean double check. shockingly bad. look at the percentage of swing state voters who say mitt romney's policies will favor the middle class. in florida it's 8%. in ohio it's 9%. in pennsylvania it's 9%. whatever the romney campaign has done to get themselves to this point, whether it's mr. romney's tax returns,

romney 44. chuck? >> the one thing i've heard on this poll is democrats are arguing that northern virginia was under represented in the poll. that said, i mean we're talking a difference of a point or two. if you will. and it's sort of in the range of what you hear where virginia is anywhere from two to five points so the number was not surprising. >> chuck todd, david gregory, you look at all of these polls and, david, look at the fact, in ohio, even the romney people understand they're down six, seven, eight points. and they're down right now in north carolina, a state they were ahead in and not so long ago. it makes you think that newt gingrich is right, mitt romney needs to turn in a great performance in the first debate, or else the window starts closing. >> this is very clear. you get several big opportunities as a candidate to make your mark. the announcement of your running mate. your convention. and then the debates. and the reality is that mitt romney is not seized on those first two events.
